Florida House Republican Leadership Responds to Gov. DeSantis Budget Signing, Vetoes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (June 29, 2020) — Florida House Speaker Jose R. Oliva and other House leaders have released the following statements in response to the signing of the statewide budget, HB 5001, the General Appropriations Act, including $1 billion in vetoes by Governor Ron DeSantis:

House Speaker Jose R. Oliva:  “The Governor took appropriate and decisive action in his vetoes announced today. $1 billion in savings, while addressing teacher pay, environmental needs, infrastructure projects, public safety, and higher education puts Florida on solid ground to be fiscally prepared to participate in an economic recovery. The Governor knows that we cannot tax and spend our way out of recession. Today’s reality is a stark reminder that in times of plenty, saving for a rainy day is the only responsible use of the excess. We are the beneficiaries of good decisions made by past legislatures and Governors to spend within our means. Governor DeSantis continues in that tradition and I believe we are better off for it in the present and the people of Florida will reap the benefits of this sustainable budgeting well into the future.”

Speaker Pro Tempore MaryLynn Magar: “The response to the coronavirus has had an immeasurable impact on Floridians’ lives and their livelihoods. People have had to adapt and adjust to brace for the future. Today, with the signing of the statewide budget, Gov. DeSantis has done the same by prioritizing needs over wants to help keep our budget balanced and our state in the best position for economic recovery. The plan signed today eliminates excess while prioritizing the state workers who have dedicated themselves to the job amid the public health crisis. It also keeps our rainy-day fund full for tomorrow’s uncertainties. Thank you, Governor DeSantis, for working with the Legislature to ensure that Florida is well prepared for recovery by signing the statewide budget.”

House Majority Leader Dane Eagle: “House Republicans are proud to see Florida’s state budget signed today by Governor DeSantis, and we thank him for his leadership throughout this unprecedented health crisis. As our state continues to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic, Floridians can be confident in this balanced, careful spending plan that puts people first, maintains a healthy reserves balance, and supports a strong economic recovery in due time. Until then, we look forward to the day that we all rise from this difficult season, together, stronger than ever.”
